About a year ago, we launched "Content Independence Day" and introduced a simple way to block AI bots from scraping your sites without your explicit permission.
Today we're writing to tell you about important upcoming changes to your default AI bot settings that give you more control and flexibility and that take into account your feedback on how you want to manage your traffic and protect your content as the AI landscape evolves.
What’s changing?
Smarter classifications: We’re refining how we categorize AI bots so you can better choose who can access your content. Updated defaults (September 15): We will adjust our default settings to automatically block certain AI crawlers that do not distinguish their intent. New controls: You are always in the driver's seat. You can easily customize these settings or opt out entirely to keep things exactly as they are. What do you need to do?
No action is needed today.
However, if you want to opt-out of the new defaults before they go into effect on September 15, 2026, you can opt-out in your Security settings. Refer to our documentation on what controls are available and how they work.
