A Crunchbase analysis of the time interval between Series A and B rounds for U.S. startups funded over the past 10-plus years found the average time lapse was around 27 months. It's the last full month of summer, and between vacations and other news (the IPO market has apparently opened), it's easy to miss some intriguing funding rounds, and August certainly had a bunch of them. Public market debuts have worked out well for some, horribly for others, and sort of "meh" for many more. Using Crunchbase data, we compare initial valuations with more recent ones for companies that made their public debuts in 2023. European venture funding halved in the second quarter of 2023 compared to a year earlier, and was down two-thirds from the peak two years ago, a quarterly decline in line with the funding reset in North America. This week didn't see quite as many $100 million-plus rounds as the previous, but it somewhat made up for that with some huge ones. AI is generating more buzz than ever, and we've seen a plethora of enormous financings recently for companies in the space with the share of investment going to AI having more than doubled from year-ago levels.
