Securing satellites and other objects in outer space may not conjure up visions of your favorite sci-fi shows, but the intersection of space and defense is drawing a lot of investor attention these days. The latest example is a space security startup that just raised $100 million. Plus, while AI funding is heavily concentrated in the U.S., Europe’s answers to OpenAI and Anthropic are getting plenty of cash too. Europe’s AI startups are getting not-insignificant sums of investor money. Just this week, Paris-based Mistral AI said it is putting the finishing touches on a $487 million round that would reportedly value it at $2 billion. While Mistral is the most heavily funded of Europe’s generative AI companies, there are at least 15 other AI-focused startups from the continent that have raised significant funding in recent quarters and that are working on areas from text-to-video synthesis to fraud detection. The company is just the latest startup that straddles the defense and space industries to raise major funding.
